The musical tradition of Yakshagana Bhagavatike represents one of the most distinctive and invaluable components of Yakshagana. While the performance tradition of Yakshagana has evolved over several centuries, its unique oral singing tradition—passed down through generations of Bhagavatas—remains the artistic heart of the theatre form.

Unlike either Carnatic or Hindustani classical music, Yakshagana Bhagavatike possesses its own aesthetic principles, melodic structures, rhythmic expression, and performance practices. As with many living oral traditions, these unique characteristics face increasing challenges from changing performance practices and the influence of other musical genres. Preserving this rich heritage has therefore become an important cultural responsibility.

Recognising this need, Sri Idagunji Mahaganapati Yakshagana Mandali initiated BhāSam (Bhāgavatike Samshodhana Shibira) in 2010 as a pioneering research, documentation, and preservation initiative dedicated to safeguarding the authentic oral singing tradition of Yakshagana.

BhāSam follows the traditional Gurukula model of learning, bringing together senior retired Bhagavatas and experienced scholars to mentor younger professional Bhagavatas through close interaction, practical training, discussion, and immersive learning. The initiative creates a rare platform where generations of practitioners exchange knowledge, helping preserve stylistic authenticity while ensuring its meaningful transmission to future performers.

During its initial phase (2010–2012), the project organised regular three-day residential workshops every month at the Mandali's Yakshāngana campus. Around 20 young professional Bhagavatas participated alongside senior resource persons, while eminent musicians, scholars, researchers, critics, and distinguished artistes from diverse traditions were invited to contribute through lectures, discussions, and demonstrations.

Supported by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, Ministry of Culture, Government of India, BhāSam made a significant contribution to strengthening the understanding and practice of traditional Yakshagana Bhagavatike among a new generation of performers.

Although the project is presently inactive due to financial constraints, its relevance has only grown over time. The Mandali remains committed to reviving and expanding BhāSam so that this extraordinary oral tradition can continue to flourish as a living part of India's intangible cultural heritage.

Through continued support from individuals, institutions, and cultural organisations, BhāSam can once again become an important centre for the preservation, documentation, and transmission of one of Yakshagana's most precious artistic traditions.
